The film has become somewhat of a cult item (and as you say a must-have for Castle completists) and it's certainly very well acted and mounted. I like your comparison with Browning's FREAKS -with which it bears compelling thematic similarities- and it also can be compared to CHAINED FOR LIFE, a 1954 film that featured the same Hilton sisters who appeared in Browning's film.
