One of the perks of Allan's countdown - and actually even more his nearlies (which I tended to prefer to a lot of the films he elevated to the top 100) - was that it led me to see so much silent Swedish cinema, not just Sjostrom but Mauritz Stiller's Saga of Gosta Berling which became one of my favorites and was in the first chapter of my series alongside Phantom Carriage.

I remember Sjostrom as being fantastic as an actor as well as director in this film, and your observation about the performances' "subtlety" registers with me too - sometimes in a 1920s melodrama the style can be very florid, but I recall it here as quite naturalistic.Joel Bockohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11238338958380683893noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6732446115262591127.post-49863065409265570272011-10-04T17:30:46.561-07:002011-10-04T17:30:46.561-07:00Sam: There was an eye here for gorgeous yet unsett...Sam: There was an eye here for gorgeous yet unsettling imagery that feels otherwordly at every time, and remains the best of those I've seen until now in this month, but that is bound to change.Jaime Grijalbahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00175192502767519362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6732446115262591127.post-85500552224148644302011-10-04T17:24:12.345-07:002011-10-04T17:24:12.345-07:00Victor Sjostrom of course is one of the silent era...Victor Sjostrom of course is one of the silent era's greatest talents and this ghost story remains one of the most vital works in Swedish cinema and a major influence on Ingmar Bergman. The flashback within a flashback device was trend setting in that early juncture of cinema as an art form, but this remains visually stunning so many decades later. Almost as if by design Criterion's new blu-ray of this was just released.

Fantastic writing and choice here Jaimie!Sam Julianonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6732446115262591127.post-10960059809940032022011-10-02T07:05:12.372-07:002011-10-02T07:05:12.372-07:00deedee:
