It's one of those movies that feel sacrilegous, but only if they look at it on its surface, as some saint-like quality shines through all the blood and nudity.Jaime Grijalbahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00175192502767519362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6732446115262591127.post-35880187194623159342011-04-14T20:49:24.987-07:002011-04-14T20:49:24.987-07:00Glad you got a chance to see this one, Jaime. It's one of my personal favorites and quite an eye-opening experience, as you noted.

The "extended" Rape of Christ sequence is a bit more, but not a ton. The reason it's so controversial is that it's even more sacrilegious, though by that point in the scene, the point has been made well enough that the additional footage doesn't really add any more shock. Really, there doesn't seem to be any good reason why it's not in there when you compare it with the rest of the film.Troy Olsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14843741571724231174noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6732446115262591127.post-45725397937539926262011-04-12T19:56:38.736-07:002011-04-12T19:56:38.736-07:00Sam: It Wasn't Complete?????? This is a horrific, vivid and often electrifying film that I had the great fortune of seeing months ago at the RUSSELLMANIA festival in Lincoln Center. You have done a great job discussing it, and I can only add that it deserves a full remastering and restoration by Warner Brothers. Ironically just today Warner Archives has announced remastered discs of Russell's SAVAGE MESSIAH and THE BOY FRIEND, which I will order (and then send you copied along with another worthy batch.) The print you watched here was missed the controversial "Rape of Christ" sequence, but all in all it was of decent quality. I'm delighted to see that you really went for it in a big way.Sam Julianonoreply@blogger.com
